Undoubtedly one of the best or perhaps the best book on Eritrea and her torn identity. The author asks questions about the psychology behind decisions as normal historians do not. They routinely amass facts, but grossly disregard the "human factor" that lead to success or failure. There's not a moment in which I lose interest because of Michela Wrong's personal dedication and refusal to be served off with easy answers.Oh and what fine language, full of savvy and congeniality! Seldom have I bother to underline so many sentences in a book (yep I still read them!). I am extremely happy to have stumbled across this book and only deplore the fact this book has not yet been published in many other languages.
Ich finde dieses Buch extrem interessant. Es erlaubt einen sehr guten Einblick in die Hintergründe dieser Region. Sehr spannend! Äthiopien & Eritrea - ein Teil der Weltgeschichte, mit dem sich mehrere Menschen befassen könnten... Meine Ausgabe kam als Second-Hand-Buch aus der Brooklyn Library, was mich zusätzlich gefreut hat :-)

Michaela wrong drückt die Ohnmacht ,die viele wenn nicht sogar die Majorität des Eritreischen Volkes aus.Das Spiel der Supermächte auf Rücken eines kleines Afrikanischen Volkes .Haile Selassie hat mal ein wahres Wort während der beschämenden Federation zeit gesagt: "ich brauch das Land EritreaUnd nicht ihre Bevölkerung ".Diese menschenverachtende Politik wird bis heute weitergetrieben mit ungebrochene Unterstützung der USA .Warum?? Es ist in Mode gekommen die Regierung in Eritrea anzuschwärzen ob mit Wahrheitsgehalt oder nicht spielt keine rolle . Beweise für die vorwürfe nicht nötig weil Susan Rice und ihre Mitspieler Sanktionen verhängen möchten um das Land im keim zu Ersticken . Bloß wo waren alle dieser Kritiker der eritreischen Regierung in der zeit von 1952-1991 in den Bittersten stunden des eritreischen Volkes ??
Michaela Wrong zeichnet die Geschichte Eritreas nach, beginnend als Kolonie Italiens, dann im zweiten Weltkrieg von den Briten erobert und dann lange Äthiopiens zugeordnet. Dabei war Eritrea lange Spielball anderer Mächte und von der Weltgemeinschaft mehr oder minder ignoriert.Die Geschichte ist gut erzählt und durchaus packend. Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, wie wenig man (oder zumindest ich) von der kleinen Nation am Horn von Afrika weiß.Allerdings macht Wrong keinen Hehl aus ihrer Bewunderung für den Staat - die Einleitung liest sich fast wie ein Propagandartikel - was in den meisten Fällen in ordnung ist. Gelegentlich verkauft sie aber Meinung als Fakt oder beschreibt Entwicklungen recht einseitig (z.B. löässt sie die Frage völlig ausser acht, ob eine Auflösung des Staates nicht doch in Ordnung gewesen wäre, bedenkt man, dass Eritrea vor der Italienischen Kolonisierung immer zu Äthiopien gehörte - die Spaltung wurde in erster Linie von den Kolonialmächten und dem äthiopischen Diktator vorarngetrieben). Aber dies geht niemals so weit, dass es mich gestört hätte (vom ersten kapitel abgesehen).Man muss auch beachten, dass dies Buch 2003 geschrieben wurde und Eritrea sich seitdem noch viel weiter in Richtung Abgrund bewegt hat. Eine aktualisierte Auflage wäre sehr wünschenswert!
The only weakness of this book is its title. It refers to a scene during WW II, when British soldiers were busy liberating Eritrea from the Italians. A local woman ululated for passing British soldiers, whereupon one of them shouted what has become the title of this highly illuminating book. In other words, the British did not liberate Eritrea to become independent and rule itself. Nor did any other nation, before or after.Every chapter in this book is a gem and an eye opener. Shamefully, what the Brits did after their victory over Italy was to dismantle and haul away every industrial investment made by Italy during the 1930s, and move it away to its other colonies, such as India and Kenya. Except for things that could not be moved like buildings: Italy turned Asmara into what is (still) the most beautiful capital city of Africa, subject of documentaries, coffee table books and a trickle of tourism. Reconstruction by elderly Eritreans of the destroyed rail link between Asmara and Massawa, covering a tortuous track and 2.200 m in altitude, is included in such tours an has been recorded in documentaries broadcast worldwide.Marcela Wrong (MW) argues convincingly that the Eritrean national character has been shaped by a succession of betrayals by the Ethiopians, the Italians, the British, the UN, and again, the Ethiopians. Anyone curious to learn why the Eritrean government (which took decades of fighting to emerge without outside help) is not amenable to Western advice, should read this book.MW has interviewed lots of key actors and observers, ranging from former Soviet generals and advisors, a US 95-year old top legal advisor to Emperor Haile Selassie, to local insiders, excentrics and notables. This book is required reading for anyone about to serve in Eritrea and/or Ethiopia and for the people supervising them. MW has been cautious to include some measure of doubt about the future of Eritrea's hard-won independence, given the increasingly autoritarian behaviour of its rather ruthless leader. Highly recommended.
